Today was INDRI DAY! We were heading out to look for indri, the cute bear looking ones with the beady eyes and they SING. Debra had to stay back and work so it was just me, Joany and Princi off into the forest. I’m starting to get my bearings a bit more now I’d been into the forest twice already. We walked for about 1.5hrs, then we saw the Indri! Two of them! They were jumping and leaping just like the sifakas yesterday, which I just love to watch. I was told that one of the students had seen that the Indri had a baby only yesterday so we were all very keen to catch a glimpse of the wee little one.
We ended up following the indri around bush bashing for about 5 hours, while they leapt and bounced from tree to tree, nibbling, grooming, resting etc. I happened to be shooting video when they decided to groom each other! I was so excited to have captured that moment. Video below (Apologies for the shakiness, I wasn’t using a tripod, was zoomed in and it was so windy and rainy!).
I was told you could ‘see the baby’ so I took photos and Joany and I were trying to figure out which part of the baby it was, he thought head and I thought butt, so clearly it was not a great photo haha. See image below.

We eventually saw the baby, THE FACE AND FOOT! I got a terrible photo of it, but after the hours of searching, I’m pretty happy I even got a photo no matter how bad.

We then came back to camp as it seemed like the indri wasn’t going to move anymore, and as soon as we got back to camp, it started to rain – so thank goodness we came back when we did. Well, that’s what I thought anyway! Turns out it was basically raining on and off all day at the camp, which we didn’t get much of it in the forest so that worked out good for us.
So a chill afternoon in the rain, going through footage and planning my next few days.
