Went along with Domohina today to learn about what she’s doing as the Reforestation Specialist in La Mananara.

They’ve created a nursery at the La Mananara field site, right at the campsite so Domohina can collect seeds and then bring them back to the nursery to wash them, to hopefully germinate, then plant them out in the forest. (Read more about our Reforestation Strategy here). I kept pointing out vegetables they were growing, I was proud I could recognise the seedlings haha Not sure if they were laughing with me or AT me but either way, it was so fun seeing all the plants in the nursery!

A lot of deforestation has happened in Madagascar and they are the replanting with eucalyptus trees as they grow well and fast, so they can then burn it down to make coal! It was so bizarre driving through a road with euc on both sides of the road, I felt like I was back in Australia! Hence why there are so many critically endangered species in Madagascar.

We then went into the forest I took a whole bunch of photos of the trees and plant species that are native and important to Madagascar. We got some footage of planting some trees today for one of our upcoming programs! Warning: I like taking pics of funghi…

We are so fortunate to have these amazing field sites that house these animals and we are already making a difference – by seeing the Indri baby, it shows that the critically endangered species is slowly growing in population and perhaps one day will not be in the endangered list at all. It’s also very cool to hear the call of the indri while walking through the rainforest!
